Deacon Lester Moore, Sr. Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Deacon Lester Moore, Sr. born Thursday, September 1, 1949, completed his earthly pilgrimage and transitioned to his heavenly home on Friday, May 13, 2022. He was of one of nine children born in a Christian home in Sylvania Georgia to the union of the late Deacon Willie (W.M.) Moore, Sr. and the late Deaconess Sadie Cooper Moore. Lester accepted Christ at an early age at the Waters Grove Baptist Church in Sylvania. He was educated in the Screven County School System. He matriculated at Albany State University (formerly Albany State College), Albany, Georgia where he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. Upon completion of his education, he moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was united in holy matrimony to Helen White. To this union were born four beautiful sons, Anthony, Lester, Jr. (Little Let), John Wesley, Sr. and Michael, Sr. Lester joined the Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Lester loved God! He loved to worship and serve in the church. He had a good time whenever he was in the House of the Lord. He was ordained as a deacon in 1979 and served for decades as Chairman of the Deacon’s Ministry. Many members of Mt. Olive Church Family lovingly referred to him as the “Favorite Deacon”. He was a bible scholar and he loved to study and teach the scriptures. It is difficult to enumerate or describe the many sacrifices that he made or the impact that he had on the Mt. Olive Baptist Church! Not only did he serve in his church, but he served with distinction around the city in other churches and on the national level with the National Baptist Convention, USA and Congress of Christian Education, where he worked with the finance committees for many years. He was often called upon to teach, train and mentor other deacons around the country. He was referred to as “A Deacon’s Deacon”. He also was referred to as “A Preacher’s Deacon”, as he loved to hear preaching and was a preacher’s supporter. Preachers always knew when Deacon Lester Moore was in the house. Lester’s curiosity, work ethic and desire to help others led him to a stellar career history in a variety of sectors. Lester worked as a manager with the Sherwin Williams Paint and The Woolworth 5 & 10 Corporations. Because he had an entrepreneurial spirit, he left the corporate life to establish the Moore’s Variety Store with his brothers. He was a licensed insurance representative. Lester, with a desire to make sure everyone received all the tax benefits that they were entitled to, completed tax returns for hundreds of individuals each year even as he worked other full-time jobs. He became employed with the Path Mark Supermarket, from which he retired. Being retired for Lester only meant that he was available to do more work. Idle hands could never be used to describe Lester. During his “retirement”, Lester became an associate with the Rick’s Funeral Home. This was a perfect fit as this position allowed him to serve and minister to individuals during some of the most difficult times in their lives. Even Lester’s hobbies included much work. He was often called upon for his cooking skills. He cooked for hundreds of people for all size events and loved every minute of it. If you get the picture that everyone who met Lester was impacted in a major way, that perception is accurate. If you get the picture that he was all work and no play, that perception would not be accurate! Lester loved to “cut up”, act silly, tell jokes, and laugh. He was a joy to be around! Deacon Lester Moore, Sr. was preceded in death by his parents, Deacon Willie and Sadie Moore, his son, Lester Jr., granddaughter, Jonae and one brother John Wesley. He leaves to celebrate his life, his wife of 44 years, Mrs. Helen Moore; his sons, Anthony, John Wesley, Sr. and his wife Tamika and Michael Sr; his siblings, Deacon Wilbert Moore, Pastor Harry Moore, Sr. and his wife Mary, and Pastor James Moore, Sr. all of Philadelphia, Pa. Pastor Addis Moore and his wife Gwendolyn, and Patsy Moore of Kalamazoo, Michigan, Debra Moore Capers and Pastor Willie Moore, Jr. of Albany Georgia; 6 grandchildren , Sarai, John Jr., Mya, Lester III, Layla, Michael Jr., a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, church family, and friends.
